Subject to certain financial thresholds, only builders who are accredited under the Australian Government Building and Construction OHS Accreditation Scheme (the Scheme) can enter into head contracts for building work that is funded directly or indirectly by the Australian Government.
The Scheme enables the government to use its influence as a client and provider of capital to improve the industry’s OHS performance. The Australian Government aims to promote the idea that work must be performed safely as well as on budget and on time.
How will I know if I need to be accredited for a project?
Notification that a project requires an accredited builder should appear in the tender or contract documentation. If this is not clear, contact the client to check if accreditation is required.
Builders who are accredited under the Scheme are regularly added to the Accreditation Register.
