October is Safe Work Month

Safe Work Australia was established in 2008 to develop national policy and guidance for WHS and workers’ compensation. Since then, they have been running national campaigns to raise awareness about WHS in the Australian working community.

Safe Work Australia will launch Safe Work Month for the month of October. This year's theme is “Sharing safety knowledge and experience benefits everyone” and they support workers in sharing the things they do, both big and small, that make their workplace safer and healthier. While it can be celebrated that Australia is one of the safest places in the world to work, the Office of the Federal Safety Commissioner (OFSC) stands with Safe Work Australia in encouraging all workers in the building and construction industry to use this month to commit to making their workplaces even safer.

Evidence shows that OFSC accredited companies have lower worker’s compensation premium rates, and injury rates decline significantly for most companies after accreditation. A large majority of accredited companies also state that being accredited has improved safety in their company overall, however there is always room for improvement. The OFSC encourages you to commit to improving health and safety in the construction industry by getting involved in Safe Work Month. You can do this by:

  • Visiting the National Safe Work Month website and accessing the resource kit
  • Running a safety initiative in your workplace
  • Sharing your safety initiative on social – use the hashtag #safeworkmonth

Safety is everyone’s business – and your knowledge and experience is worth sharing!
