Safe Work Australia Week – Safety Ambassadors

For Safe Work Australia Week 2010, both my Office and I, have been nominated to be Safety Ambassadors for this year’s campaign. Safe Work Week runs from 25-29 October 2010 and focuses attention on workplace safety issues around Australia and aims to encourage all working Australians to get involved in and concentrate on, safety in their workplace to reduce the incidents of death, injury and disease. Over 140,000 Australians are seriously injured at work every year and more than 250 die as a result of work-related injuries.

I see my role as Safety Ambassador important to the promotion and strengthening of the role of my Office to the construction industry at large. It is imperative that all industry participants demonstrate a strong commitment to developing a safety culture within their organisations and across the building and construction industry, not just leave it up to a select few to deal with.

As one of the largest purchasers of building and construction work nationally, the Australian Government is committed to being a model client and sees this as an ideal opportunity to augment and further influence OHS outcomes across the industry. I encourage you all to have a look at the Safe Work Australia website to get involved in Safe Work Week 2010 and raise the awareness of the Safe Work Week messages.

Jeff Willing, Federal Safety Commissioner.
