OFSC Webinar – Lift Planning for Crane Risk Management

21 December 2021

The Federal Safety Commissioner’s final webinar for 2021 was held on 24 November. The session was hosted by Federal Safety Officer Ralph Willson, with presentations by Brandon Hitch, CEO of the Crane Industry Council of Australia (CICA), and Stuart Edwards, Director at Edwards Heavy Lift and member of the CICA Technical Committee. The webinar attracted approximately 300 attendees from companies, regulators, and industry associations, and featured interactive question and answers throughout.

While there were improvements in mobile plant audit performance throughout the 12-month Hazard 2020 campaign, there is still room for considerable improvement. Over 280 audits reviewed mobile plant criteria during the campaign, with mobile crane audit sub-criteria being failed approximately one-third of the time.

The webinar features an overview of lift plan definitions and terminology, advice on what level of lift planning is suitable for different types of lifts, and discussion on the relevant checklists, templates, registers, plans that can be employed in each instance. The session closes with detailed examples of lifts, including some practical demonstrations of load variation.
